Upgrade your Licence

Progressive Access

Students may ride larger capacity machines ‘earlier’ by taking the ‘Progressive Access’ route.

Between the ages of 19-23 a rider can take and pass a category A2 licence allowing them to ride a machine restricted 47bhp. After completing 2 full years on the A2 licence you may upgrade to a Category A licence by resitting both Module 1 and 2 tests on a more powerful Category A compliant machine. If you reach 24 before your 2 year period is complete, you may still upgrade your licence to Category A by resitting the tests but you must be in possession of a valid Theory Test Pass Certificate for Category A to take the tests. There is also a 6 month time restriction between passing Module 1 and Module 2 tests when using Progressive Access.

Progressive Access from A1 to A is normally done via the A2 route. However a rider holding a full A1 restricted licence cannot jump directly to Category A upon reaching 24 years of age without a valid Theory Test Pass Certificate for Category A. This may involve resitting a theory test if it is over 2 years old and reached or passed its expiry date.
